Ever wonder where it comes from?
Well, the serious answer refers to frightened soldiers during war time who were sometimes reputed to take this extreme action to be able to leave the battlefield.
But my favorite comes from ‘ole Hoppy…
Remember Hopalong Cassidy – that black-suited, white-horsed cowboy from the early days of TV?
In one origin tale our fave gunslinger made a bad whoops! In the process of trying to get his gun out of the holster… Yep!
Maybe that’s why in subsequent episodes he became famous for never drawing his gun?
Makes sense to me.
Been there? Done that?
What do ya say?
