SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - STUMBLING BLOCKS

When we are dealing with long term goals our stumbling blocks often turn into boulders!

The path to achieving our stated objective can begin to feel interminable and impossible.

It's not just delayed gratification, but delayed gratification with speed bumps!

How much training do we get in dealing with this?  If you guessed 'none' you are pretty much on the mark!

Not surprising that it's a major challenge to achieve these long term goals and to watch those we care about struggle with achieving theirs!

4 STEPS FOR GETTING 'THERE'

We often perceive the current behavior - the one we say we want to change - as a reward!

Think about it:  eating junk, being lazy, couch potatoing it… how many times have you used the expression 'comfort food' …

Then we set ourselves up to lose that comfort - and not just for a day, but forever…

Check out these four easy steps to help the journey:

Step one:  Acknowledge how hard these long term goal are and give yourself credit for taking the journey!

Step two:  Create new rewards along the way.  Don't wait until the end of your journey.  Reward yourself on a regular basis with things that don't mess with your goal.

Step three:  Create an internal cheerleader voice.  Your cheerleader says:
"This is hard stuff!"  "Hang in there!"  "You're taking good steps!"  "You'll get there!"  "Yay you!"

Step four:  Find the laugh!  It's always there if you look for it.  We humans are truly funny creatures.  Laughter always lightens the load - and helps us regain perspective.

  1. Really great post, Carol. I love it when I can immediately start applying the ¨Dance αΊ…ith It¨ apps as I am reading your words. This post reminded me of your post of a few months ago on ¨neuroplasticity¨ (such a POWERFUL concept). I'm doing your apps above ASAP!
