SERIOUSLY SPEAKING – DON'T BE A 'BLAME HOG'

Is it a type of narcissism (that frequently referenced personality disorder that is defined by an inflated sense of self-importance and an extreme preoccupation with one’s self) … or perhaps our old friend ‘control’ that makes us take credit for more than our share of the blame in our interactions with others?

We humans have a very strong aversion to feeling out of control - even if it means assuming responsibility for the behavior of others!

DANCE WITH IT!   EXPERIENTIAL APPS
An opportunity to experiment with some fun ideas...

Think about some of the things you feel bad about or blame yourself for.

As long as you take all of the responsibility for what ever happened – you have the illusion of being in control!

Negative, yes - but your very own negative.

If it’s your fault, in a rather convoluted way, it is also in your hands!

To experiment with this:

Choose one instance from the past when you totally blamed yourself for whatever went wrong.

Maybe an interaction with a friend?

A family member?

A failed interview or exam?

Remember what you felt when that happened?

Now re-script the experience – this time giving yourself only 50% of the responsibility.
Check out what you feel this time.  How is it different?
