When we are ailing, whether from injury or illness, we tend to feel vulnerable.
Interestingly, many members of the animal kingdom intuitively realize this and look for safe refuges - remains of wounded animal have been found in caves and around areas of hot springs.

Finding refuge and support makes sense when we are
wounded. This intuitive, seemingly hard
wired, primitive response would seem to come from the awareness that in a more
vulnerable state we easily become prey.
Unfortunately, we humans seem
to have developed the habit of not only being less 'care-ful' of ourselves at
these times, but actually turning on ourselves.
We often re-act to our vulnerability with anger. We become bullies, scolding ourselves for
getting sick or incurring an injury. We
look for ways we have caused the problem, ascribing fault and blame.
Once we begin the process of bullying ourselves, we trigger feelings of helplessness and rebellion, often refusing to take the necessary steps in supporting the healing process.

3 STEPS TO EMPOWER YOURSELF IN THE HEALING PROCESS
DO WHAT YOU
CAN!
Take some proactive positive steps - research shows it helps!
1) Find a
doctor who feels like an ally and doesn't diminish your attempts to participate
in your own healing.
2) Try some alternatives. Many alternative therapies can nicely add to
traditional medicine. And many self-help
therapies allow us to feel more empowered which seems to aid in healing. Self-hypnosis, visualization and massage are
all things that allow us to feel like we are participating in our recovery.
3) Try some positive 'Self Talk'. Talk to the part of you that is hurting - and
give it a voice - let it be part of a dialog.
A typical conversation might be:
You:
"I don't understand how this
happened! And I don't like it!"
Ailing Body Part:
"Well, I don't like it either! I hurt!"
You:
"Well, what can I do to make thing
better?"
Body Part:
"Pay attention to me! I need you to focus on how to help me!
And stop being so angry!
And stop being so angry!
