SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - AWARENESS SELFIES

Growing up most of us have heard, "You are too selfish!"  and "Did you see what you just did?" Confusing admonitions indeed!

We criticize our children if we think they are too focused on 'self' and at the same time demand that very focus!

An integral element of mental health is balance which clearly comes into play in the area of 'self'.

We do need to be self-aware - clued into how we interact with our world and impact others and ourselves.

Self-absorption, on the other hand, is a limiting phenomenon that isolates us and creates pain - for ourselves and those around us!

HOW TO SNAP A MENTAL SELFIE

To find out where you fit on the 'Self' Spectrum think about a recent difficult situation with someone and ask yourself the following questions:

1)  Did I make assumptions about what the other person was thinking?

2)  Did I make assumptions about what they were feeling - especially about me?

3)  Did I check in with myself and look at my 50% of the situation?

4)  Did I automatically judge myself - or the other person?

5)  What punishment or suffering did I require of myself - or the other person?

6)  Did I find a healthy, non-accusatory, way to resolve the issue?

SELFIES…

Self… self… self…

Focused

Aware

Centered

Absorbed

Esteem…

Hmmm… interesting how many of these hyphenated 'self' things we have in our culture and how subtly different they each are…

What do ya say?
Where do you put yourself on this spectrum?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - THE LURE OF THE 'FIX'

Where and how did we get the notion of being attracted to people we need to 'fix'?

Think about the stories that we grow up with:

Cinderella (the Prince saves her from a life of servitude!)
Snow White (one simple kiss and the guy brings her back to life!)
And how about all those Chic Flics…

The theme of 'rescue' permeates our culture and the 'rescuer' is truly perceived as a Royal.

THE  DANGER OF 'FIXING'

Do you really think the person you rescue feels appreciation?
Think again!

Unlike in fairy tales, in real life rescuing tends to engender resentment.
No one likes to think that they are perceived as not good enough.

What do you imagine is your 'value added' to the other person?
Make a list.
Now imagine that your roles are reversed.
How does it feel to be on the receiving side of 'fixing'?

FLIP THIS… HOUSE?

Are you into 'fixer-uppers'?

You know what they are, right?

No, not those houses - the human ones!

Definition of a human 'fixer-upper':
Someone you consider in need of improvement - with you as the designated general contractor… the one who pulls it all together!

What do ya say?

Does this sound at all familiar?
Any ideas about the flip rate on this one?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING – GRIBBIT!

As much as we try – we are indeed human!

What does this translate to on those days after Thanksgiving?

If you are like most of us you’re probably carrying a bit of extra weight…on your body and in your mind!

We tend to idealize the image of the holiday dinner – forgetting perhaps that those we love have not suddenly been kissed by fairy princesses – they are still human with all the nicks, cuts and flaws that come with our kind.

Putting us all together around a table loaded with tempting food can easily bring out the frog in us and lead to stress, overeating, competition!

THE FLF (say FLUFF!)  FORMULA FOR HOLIDAY RECOVERY

Forgive
First yourself – okay, you ate a lot – so what?  Let it go!  If you hold onto it by scolding yourself you know you’ll do worse tomorrow!

Shock yourself by being kind – no regrets!

And along the way – if you weren’t perfect with friends and family forgive that too!

And maybe even forgive a few of them?

Laugh
The most potent mental health remedy is our ability to laugh at it all!
To expedite this piece of the strategy think about any moments that might have been in the annoying category...

Now, use your imagination to create humor out of any crumbs of melodrama still lurking!
Exaggerate those moments to the point of laughter!

Forget
Any slights, faux pas, nastiness – imagine you can bundle it all up, babushka style, and dump it all into the nearest trash heap.

HOLIDAY CHEER…

"Agg!"  she moaned as she staggered into the room…

Ok, a little exaggerated here, but she was groaning…

"Thanksgiving," she whinned, " was… was… OMG!  I don't even know what to say!  And it was only day 1 of the 'Holiday Season'!"

So, seriously, is this really the 'most wonderful time of the year'?

CHECK IT OUT

EXPECTATIONS:
Harmony and Understanding
Love and Peace
Good will to men
Perfect presents
Perfect food

 WHOOPS...

What do ya say?
Can you see that crash coming, or what…

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - DANCING WITH CRITICISM

As children we learn to respond defensively to criticism.  We are small and the person criticizing us is usually big!

As an adult it is important to drop the defensive, victim mask and acknowledge whatever is going on.

Maybe you did do something imperfect?

Or, maybe the other guy is a bully?  You're not perfect… and unfortunately, neither are they!

IMMUNIZE YOURSELF FROM THE 'CRITICISM PLAGUE' IN 8 SIMPLE STEPS

1)  Make a list of your flaws.  No judgment - just observation!

2)  Study the list.  Are any of the items truly toxic?
(i.e. things that cause true suffering.)

3)  Remove toxic items by changing behavior - yes, you can do this!

4)  Study the remaining items.

5)  Now go through the list and say, "I am ______(insert item) and it is ok."

6)  Repeat above exercise until the items no longer have any charge…

7)  Now imagine someone else accusing you of one of the now 'chargeless' items.

8)  Imagine smiling at them and saying:  "Yes, you are right!  I am!"

CHECK IT OUT!  IT MIGHT SOUND SILLY BUT IT WORKS - AND LIFE GETS WAY EASIER - AND MORE REAL!
