SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - 'DANCING' WITH THE DOWNWARD PULL

In our culture we are often shunted away from our feelings - especially the 'negative' ones.

We run from them, medicate against them, talk over and around them and are scolded for not 'getting it together' fast!

Nice if it worked…
Unfortunately, pushing things down tends to create emotional basements full of unwanted and unresolved feelings…

PARADOXICAL THINKING…

Going down also facilitates going up…

Feeling appropriately sad allows us to feel appropriately joyful…

Acknowledging anger allows us to let it go…

DEFYING GRAVITY

Remember that song from "Wicked"?
Okay, slightly different story, but still… here's an interesting thought ...

In order to counterbalance gravity, you have to feel the pull!

This is second nature to dancers, and of course part of their training.
So, how does this affect the rest of us?

That same paradox applies:  In order to go up you need to experience down!

Think about that one!

What do ya say?
Can you let yourself feel it?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - BE PREPARED!

Ever wonder why we tend to be ready for the worst?  Why would we 'borrow trouble' by anticipating the 'killer bees' when they are 10 states away?

We seem to be conditioned from very early ages to expect disasters and accordingly be ready to handle them.

Remember the Boy Scout Motto?

"In the third part of Scouting for Boys Robert Baden-Powell explains the meaning of the phrase:

The Scout Motto is: BE PREPARED which means you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your DUTY.

Be Prepared in Mind ... by having thought out beforehand any accident or situation that might occur, so that you know the right thing to do at the right moment, and are willing to do it.      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scout_Motto

"Watch out!"  "Be careful!"  "Think before you act!"
These are all catchwords in our culture.  The question is, to what extent they also become panic buttons that keep us in an unnecessary state of constant and stressful vigilance?

CREATING BALANCE

Is it wrong or unhealthy to be concerned about the future and prepare for possible coming events?

YES and NO…

It's all about balance and how much of your time is spent agonizing about future disasters…

Where is your balance?  Try answering the following questions:

1)  In the course of a day, how often do you find yourself worrying about tomorrow?

2)  How much of your day is spent anticipating negative events?

3)  When good things happen, do you duck, expecting 'the roof to fall in'?

4)  When others tell you tales of woe do you get scared that you are next in line?

5)  How often do you knock wood

AWFULIZING... OR THE ATTACK OF THE KILLER BEES!

"OMG!," she gasped, "I am so upset!  I just had a phone call from my father warning me about the killer bees that are coming my way!"
OK, she lived in South Carolina and those bees were in Arizona, but hey, they could get there… right?

Or how about this one:

"My husband got home late last night… I just know he is cheating on me!"
All right, it does happen, but really, one night?

And then there's my favorite:

"I just know," she insisted, "the bomb is about to drop…"
Well, again, maybe, but she had been insisting for twenty years…

You get the drift with all of this, right?

Bad things do happen sooner or later, but, seriously, killer bees?

What do ya say?
Do you have a tendency to awful-ize?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - RESISTANCE FREE REBOOT

What keeps us from easily and seamlessly rebooting, continuing, or starting new?

Perhaps the voice of our Internal Bully is getting in the way?
Think about it…

It seems we have a hair trigger when it comes to our bully voices.

At every misstep, course correction or slip, this 'voice' tends to get angry and berate us - calling us incompetent, lazy, and the rest of those critical names.

Our Bullys seem to stand sentinel, ready to pounce at the first blip, and of course we all know the result of being scolded … and it is rarely good!

INOVOCATIONS FOR BULLY BANISHMENT

At the first sign of that insidious Voice, imagine it in front of you, look it straight in the eye, and intone the following:

"Get a life!"
"Chill!"
"Get lost!"
"Gimme a break!"
"Do over, do over!"
"ABRACADABRA - BE GONE!"

Did that make you laugh?
Sound silly?

So is your internal Bully!

It is a rigid, unrealistic part of yourself that needs to be banished - and laughter always helps!

STARTING OVER… AGAIN?

Don't you hate it when you 'lose it' and have to start over?

THE GYM…
THE DIET…
THE RELATIONSHIP…

Ugh!

But think about it…
You're not really starting over - that's impossible!
You know that old saying about not being able to step into the same river twice?

Rivers move - and so do we!

Today you really are in a different place than yesterday - anything else is impossible - ask any of your quantum physics friends…

SO GO FOR IT!

IT'S ALL NEW!

What do ya say?
