SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - PROBLEM SOLVING IN 6 EASY STEPS

THE ART OF EMOTIONAL NEGOTIATING

Like the teenager in yesterday's Fable (see 7/8/2014) we often deal with difficult problematic situations by barreling into them head on.

We use what we feel and think to attack the problem - or conversely tell ourselves it is too difficult to fix and run in the other direction.

However, as we mature, we hopefully open ourselves to the art of 'Emotional Negotiating' which really means coming to a balance between who we are and what we want and who we are dealing with and what is most likely to get through to them.

6 EASY STEPS TO PROBLEM SOLVING

1)  Who are you?  Yes, this needs to come first.  What are your strengths and weaknesses in the current problematic situation?

          *Are you patient?
*Are you coming from a position of power?
*What cards do you actually hold?
*Are you a risk taker or risk adverse?

2)  Who is your opposite number?  Ask yourself those same questions listed above about them.

3)  Clarify your goal.  Do you have a desired outcome?  Are you looking to solve a specific problem?  Or is your goal to make the other person admit guilt and suffer?  No judgment.  Just make sure you are clear - with yourself.

4)  What are the possible outcomes?  First imagine 'Best Case'.  Now switch to 'Worst Case'.  And finally, ask yourself the 'Most Likely' outcome.

5) Promise not to Bully yourself if the outcome is not perfect - and not to gloat in the other guy's face if it is 'Best Case'!

6)  Now give it your best shot.

WE NEED TO TALK… A FABLE

Once upon a time a very young woman was on an archaeological dig in a land far, far away.

Witnessing misbehavior on the part of the leader, an older and much venerated man, she determined that she would set him straight… No problem, right?

Obviously he needed to be told what he was doing wrong!

So, our heroine righteously marched herself into his tent to fix the situation…

Ever see a bull react to a red cape?

Whoa!  Rolling his eyes and snorting with rage he kicked her off the dig - and demanded she take her poor innocent roommate with her!

Now, 18 year olds are not famous for being strategic, but what do ya say?

Shouldn't she have seen this one coming?

Wouldn't you?

At 18?
How about now?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - WHERE'S THE IMPACT?

Successful communication is finding the balance point between what you are saying and how you say it.

Want to be heard?

Think about your message, the ears you are aiming it at, and the frequency needed to transport it from your mouth to those ears.

Having feelings, releasing them and expressing them are three different things.

We all have feelings triggered by internal and external events.  This is part of the definition of being human.

We also have a pretty imperative need to release these feelings.  How we do this is defined by who we are and what we are comfortable with.

Expressing the feelings to others has a lot to do with strategy.

We have the ability to decide what is good for us - and them - what is effective in accomplishing our goal and choosing how and to whom, we wish to share what we feel.

COMING IN FOR A LANDING

While staying 'cool' and keeping our feelings under control is a definite value in our society, there are moments that a strong expression of feelings is appropriate.

As a means of 'training' yourself in the strategic sharing of emotions ask yourself the following:

What is my goal in sharing what I am experiencing?

Is this an appropriate person to do it with?

Am I choosing a way of sharing that is dumping on that person?

If I am dumping, do they deserve it and will it get me what I want?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - BACKTRACKING THE MOMENT

Despite many warnings to the contrary throughout our lives -
          "If you do that, you'll…"
          "If you say that you'll…"
          "If you act that way…"
- we still often seem to experience what we do as discreet segments of behavior rather than part of a chain reaction.

How many times do we wonder why someone acted in a certain way or something happens to us, not recognizing the impact of our previous steps in the dance?

Think about something that has puzzled you in the past - someone else's behavior towards you or an event that happened that seemed to come out of nowhere.  It could be this week, or sometime this past month, or even further into the past if it's still on your mind.

Now imagine that you are a detective and you were hired to discover how the event in question has come about.

* As a detective you look for clues that led up to the moment of the 'crime'.

* You look for the 'he said, she said' that occurred the day of the incident, the day before, the week before.

* Your task is to track - but not blame - THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

Objectivity is the name of the game.  Drop the judgmental attitude and just investigate!

Have some fun with your new role...
The goal is for you to come to an "Ah ha! Now I get it" moment.

THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF…

Most of us remember the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf.  read the story

You remember, right?  This Aesop's Fable was used to teach us all the horrible consequences (all your sheep getting eaten…) of lying.

After playing verbal games and crying for help when there was no danger, when the wolf actually shows up - yep, no body believes the kid …

Perhaps another even more significant tag line to this story might be about  the consequences of all our actions.

Perplexed, the boy in the story asks the villagers:  "Why didn't you come?"

We often seem to be just as bewildered about the reactions we create with our actions.

What do ya say?

Can you think of times you were taken aback by someone's behavior towards you…
perhaps not realizing they were actually re- acting … to you?
