NITE MUSIC

"I woke in the middle of the night obsessing," she moaned.
"I just kept going over and over everything I've ever done wrong in my whole life!"
Her friend was listening and nodding his head.
"I do that all the time," he agreed.

"But usually mine is shorter term," he grinned sadly.
"I only deconstruct the past week, going over all the 'shoulda', 'coulda', 'woulda's'…

What do ya say?
Ever do this?
No?

What species did you say you were?

BLACK HOLES AND DARK MATTER…

"It pulls at me," she declared.
She was talking about old unfinished emotional matter.

"Suck!  Suck!  Slurp!"

"You know how they describe black holes in space? That gravitational pull…"

"So, it's nice for you people to say 'work it through, let it go'.  But seriously…"

"That pull is so strong!"

What do ya say?
Ever feel that pull?

Heh, heh…

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - NAG NAG NAG

Unfinished business in our lives is a nag!

It just sits there and chatters away - intermittent and sometimes incessant sound bites…

We can try to ignore the noise.

We are constantly exhorted to 'forget it!', 'ignore it!' and 'let it go!'   Blah  Blah  Blah…

But maybe there's a reason that noise persists?
Maybe there's a gift there?

You know, one of those 'I keep bumping into this so maybe there's something for me to learn here, moments?

AN INVITATION…

Certain holidays officially celebrate letting go and making whole, including valuable rituals that create open space on our emotional path.

Holding onto old business can create a tear in the fabric of our being, so these sacred moments in time are about releasing the outdated parts of our stories.

You can't really fake it - that just compounds the chaos and adds to the bumpy road.

It's about having the courage to dig in and down - to find the rusty places that need cleaning out and releasing them!

We hope that this Blog aides in this process and invite all of you to courageously step into this space!

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - THE GIFT OF UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Realistic expectations are crucial in human emotional dealing and healing.

When something happens that 'gets under our skin' it's usually for a good reason!

Sometimes it's because it is totally unexpected and we feel blindsided.  In these cases we hold onto it as if that will allow us to be prepared the next time something hits out of the blue.

Sometimes an incident is difficult to walk away from because it taps into old unfinished family drama.  Once we realize what old story it is tapping into we can use it to help us take a step in healing the old wound.

And sometimes something happens that challenges our view of how things should be in the world!  These experiences are particularly difficult because in order to resolve them we have to revise our own beliefs!

The most important - and beneficial - aspect of unfinished business is to see it as a potential opportunity for personal growth!

WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND?

Do you find yourself re-running the 'film' of something that happened in the past?

Are you repeating the same scenes again and again?
Do you say the same lines in your head as you imagine the incident?
If so you might think of yourself as 'STUCK'!

To un-stuck:

Play with the story!
Run the 'film' of the event backwards!  Yes, you can!
At this point in time it really is your story and you can manipulate it any way you want…
Imagine what you might do differently if the last scene played first.
Change your lines!  This story now belongs to you and you can be as outrageous as you want!
Change the scenery, the costumes.

The idea of this manipulation is to empower yourself and realize that once the actual event is over all that remains is the story you are telling yourself - and you have a lot of control of your self-talk!

HOLDING ON…

"I keep thinking I've worked through this one," she said with a puzzled look on her face.

"And then, WHOMP!"

"Out of the blue I'm right back there again, chewing over that same annoying story, repeating the details in my mind and out loud to anyone I can get to listen."

She could have been talking about an ended relationship or a negative interaction with just about anyone…

"Why can't I just let go and move on?" she demanded. "What am I doing wrong!"

What do ya say?
Does this one ring any bells?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - DREAMWORK 102

Ever wonder about your dreams?  If you are like most of us, your thoughts about dreaming have run the gamut from dismissive to intrigued.

There are many ways of interpreting dreams from the religious and mystic (think Joseph in the Bible read more)  to the societal (the dream catchers of the Native Americans are a wonderful example of this).more

One useful approach is to assume that dreams are about 'unfinished business' - anything from a tidbit of information that lodged in your mind and needs sorting out, to focusing and perhaps finding a solution to an on going problem.

Sometimes they might give us the opportunity to re-meet demons from our past and finally put them to rest!  By focusing on the content of our dreams we have the possibility to learn more about ourselves and perhaps heal old wounds!

THE MAGIC OF WORKING WITH DREAMS . . .

Don't judge - jot!
The easiest method of working with dreams is to keep some writing equipment near your bed and jot down what ever you wake up with.

Now ask yourself the following:

What is the 'top- note'?   This is the obvious story of the dream.

What is the contextual feel of your dream?  Color?  Movement? Sound?

Now for the fun part!  Since you wrote the 'script' - it's your dream, right -  you actually created each character, landmark and scene in the dream.

Our unconscious minds talk to us in images and metaphors and it can actually be fun to puzzle them out!

An easy way to do this is to 'own' everything in your dream.

Let's say you dream about an elephant walking down Broadway and singing to passersby…

To 'own' this dream you would:

*Be the elephant and describe yourself as this singing  elephant.
"I am a big grey elephant and I feel ____ and I like_____ and today I'm ____.
You get the idea!

*Now be Broadway.  Yes, you can be in inanimate objects in your dreams - there's a reason you put them there.

*So you might say:  "I'm Broadway and I'm really famous and very busy…"

Now let the elephant and Broadway talk to each other.
Have some fun with this!

What do each of the pieces of your dream tell you about this moment in your life?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - UNFINISHED BUSINESS 102

There are certain theories that contend that we humans have a strong internal need to complete things - including unfinished emotional issues from our past.

According to this premise we have a tendency to keep repeating and recreating even painful situations, until we finally 'get it right', which in this context means we resolve the original emotional dilemma.

So, in yesterday's story about inviting the elephant into the house and having to deal with the mess that comes with it, this theory would contend that the reason that we keep welcoming those same old messes is to finally decode them, figure out the original problem and find a way to release ourselves from the limitations that come with it.

In this way of looking at things, we are re-inviting those same elephants in order to help ourselves heal!

CLEANING UP ELEPHANT POOP…
Where does this particular elephant fit into your own narrative (life story)?

Look at the specific messes you keep re-playing - those difficult situations that seem to keep repeating.

What are the common elements?

What are the characteristics of the players?

Where are the similarities?

How do you react?

Now see if you can de-code the story by bringing it back to your early life and family.

Ask yourself if this situation has any similarities to the old one.

Are the personalities of the players reminiscent of any people from the past?

How about the way you ended up feeling?

What was the story that was told about you back then?

Now ask yourself what part of the old story you need to release in order to heal?
