HUG A TREE

The girl was sitting on a high branch in a beautiful old tree in an amazing ancient forest, the world spread out in front of her.

She found herself drifting into an altered state. From this one spot, high up in the tree, everything was available to her…

Her friends looked up at her and yelled.

"Come on!" they shouted.
"We're exploring the forest."
"You're going to miss everything!"

Hmmm…

What do ya say?  Do you understand this one?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - MERCY AND COMFORT

One way of looking at suffering is that it is created by the combination of pain - either physical or emotional - and an overlay of causality and blame.
In other words it is possible that pain can trigger our internal Bullies!  These learned and internalized scolding 'voices' then sink us into a morass of despair.

One of the most beautifully comforting songs about releasing oneself from this suffering was written by Leonard Cohen in 1967. To hear all the lyrics:  Sisters of Mercy - Leonard Cohen - YouTube

O the sisters of mercy they are not
Departed or gone,
They were waiting for me when I thought
That I just can't go on,

And they brought me their comfort
And later they brought me this song.
O I hope you run into them
You who've been traveling so long. . .

If your life is a leaf
That the seasons tear off and condemn
They will bind you with love
That is graceful and green as a stem.

When I left they were sleeping,
I hope you run into them soon.
Don't turn on the light
You can read their address by the moon. . .

6 REMEDIES TO DISPEL SUFFERING

1)  Remove guilty feelings by confronting your Bully voice (the 'I must have done something to cause this' part of you)

2)  Allow your inner Victim (that 'feeling sorry for yourself' part that we all have) a few minutes of air time and then banish it from your kingdom!

3)  Allow your inner Rebel ( that 'third finger waving' part of all of us) a good 5 minutes of ranting - but watch out for Rebel re-action!

4)  Empower yourself - Do some research, ask questions, name the pain - take some steps - try meditation, write a poem, sing a song, anything pro-active sends a new set of messages along your neuro-pathways.   Might not make the pain go away but definitely can reduce suffering!

5)  Try visualization (really not so different from self-hypnosis).  Have inflammation?  Imagine the area as large and bright red, now send icy blue images to overlay the area and shrink that swelling - an Arctic ice floe would do the trick - you can even throw in a penguin or two for comic relief, and yes -

6)  - anything you do to create a smile definitely reduces suffering!

Remember:  check in for that wonderful physical clue that it's working … you know a shift is happening if you automatically find yourself taking a deep breath!

A VALENTINE'S DAY THOUGHT:  REMEMBER THAT AIRLINE MANDATE:
Put your own O2 mask on first!
Hey, love yourself!

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING – THE ART OF LETTING GO

Throughout our lives the theme of letting go challenges us.

Ever see a young child’s bewilderment at that first tooth that falls out?

Why do you think parents invented the tooth fairy?

Yes, it is a bribe – an inducement to let that tooth go in the promise of better things to come. . . riches ( in my day it was a quarter!) and even better teeth!

4 affirmations and beliefs for letting go:

*Believe that is is okay to close a door…

*Be okay with empty space (remember that baby  tooth?)

*Have faith that life is full of next steps. . .

*We are always stepping into new realities whether  we recognize them or not!

Try putting this list somewhere you see everyday – check in periodically and feel the results!

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING – EVERYDAY MEDITATION MADE EASY!

The word ‘meditation’ comes from the Latin verb ‘meditari’ which means to think and contemplate.

It is believed that meditation in one form or another has been around since pre-historic times.  (The Biblical prophets were reputed to be meditators!)  There must be a reason, right?

The reported benefits include relaxation, building energy, lowering blood pressure, lessening depression and anxiety, increasing concentration and memory, and increasing self esteem.

Don’t have the time or inclination to sit around staring at a candle?
No problem.

Turn everyday activities into meditative moments!

Meditation is about narrowing your focus, repetitive actions, and deep breathing…

Easy enough to build into some of our daily activities.

Here’s a list of some things that can easily turn into ‘Everyday Meditative Moments' (EMM'S):

Check out this list of activities and experiment with turning them into EMM'S. Write down how you are feeling right before you try this experiment.

          Folding laundry

          Vacuuming

          Washing dishes

          Gardening

          Walking

          And yes, video games!

Breath deeply, narrow your visual focus, and feel the repetitive movement of the activity. . .
Even hitting a tennis ball against a backboard can become a meditation!
If you have a type of music that zones you out, try adding it to the mix.

Jot down how you are feeling after your meditative moment (remember ‘moment’ - it doesn’t have to be long).

IS THIS THE ANSWER?

Everything’s a meditation,” she told me.

True we were in Japan…

But ironing?

Really?

I had just asked her why she smiled as she ironed my Dad’s uniforms.  I mean what could be more annoying than ironing?

Drove me crazy.

“No,” she told me.

“Wrong attitude.”

“Get into it.”

“Breathe.”

“Enjoy the rhythm of your movement…”

I loved her message and have kept it with me over the years…

But, seriously, ironing?

What do ya think?

Can you get behind this one?
