SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - DIVERSITY WHAT A TRIP!

It seems that we are sometimes trained from an early age to separate the world into 'them' and 'us'.

We learn to create boundaries.

Sadly, if we continue this limiting belief into adulthood we rip ourselves off from much of the richness available to us!

IMAGINARY JOURNEYS
Imagine, as a child, you were able to visit different cultures - to magically and safely 'drop in' and sample the food, music, color and beliefs of many different places…

TAKE A JOURNEY:
HUG A FURRY BABY
Visit the Giant Panda preserve in Chengdu, China.
RIDE A CAMEL
Experience the majesty of the desert and the pyramids of Egypt
ENJOY A DANCE
Visit with the Gitanos in the south of Spain
FLOAT
Immerse yourself in the magic of the Dead Sea in Israel

And as you travel, imagine (remember this is magic - language is no barrier!), being able to talk to everyone you meet - sharing sounds, thoughts, stories and appreciation!

HAPPY? MERRY? HMMM…

"Happy Birthday!" she wished me…

Sweet?

Sure except it wasn't my birthday - it was hers!

But okay, it was understandable.
She was only 3 years old and at that age, the concept of 'difference' is still a little mushy.

It isn't until later that we understand and truly value our differences.

What do ya say?
You get the message here, right?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - WHAT IS DIVERSITY?

One of the fascinating aspects of human kind is our diversity…

We come from different cultures - even within the same country - city - and yes family!

Our position in these macro and micro cultures weaves the fabric of our beliefs.

Understanding this certainly adds complexity to our dealings with others, but also a wonderful richness and variety!

MAKING DIFFERENCES OKAY…

This one is simple:  We are not the same, and not only is this okay…it is reality and has to be okay!

Think about the people in your life:  family members, friends, and partners.

Now think about the ways they are different from you.
Now think about how often their differences have annoyed you…

Now imagine that instead of annoying you…you found these differences fascinating!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DO THIS?

ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY…

Another winter holiday approaching…

Another opportunity to be thankful to have come through one more annual cycle…

Another moment to appreciate diversity…

We are all humanly similar and wonderfully different!

May these holidays help us to understand that our ways are not the only ways…

And feel thankful for what we can learn from each other!

See ya next week!

IN THE EYES OF THE BEHOLDERS…

Two people were sitting side by side at the train station.

He was a businessman.  She was a Cultural Anthropologist.  They didn't know each other.

A woman walked past wheeling an adorable toddler in a stroller.

The woman's hand was out, asking for money.

"Humph!" the businessman growled.
"They are parasites on society!  She makes hundreds a day!"

"Wow!" the Anthropologist exclaimed.  "How resourceful!"

Hmmm…

And then there's the thing about black cats… You know how everyone says they're bad luck?  Well, check this out:

'Black cats are lucky: the gene giving them a dark coat makes them less
susceptible to disease than light-colored cats.

Black cats have been associated with bad luck in some Western cultures.
There isn't one specific reason for this belief, but it seems to be a combination of folklore and superstition beginning in     the Middle Ages.'

What do ya say?
Could the world possibly be as diverse as the eyes of the beholders?

SUNDAY SMILES - GOT DIVERSITY?

This morning I got into a cab - yup, here we go again… another taxi tale…

Anyhow, when I told the driver where to go, he seemed confused, so I switched to Spanish.

No, problema…

He nodded his head happily and headed to the left  - wrong direction!

Turned out he only spoke French - and I'm dyslexic…

When we got it all sorted out he asked me - in French - why I was laughing so hard…

Can you say 'multi-culturally dyslexic' - in French?

What do ya say?
How diverse are you?

Winter is truly a time to celebrate diversity with all the different ways we humans welcome the winter holiday season!
