LOSS PREVENTION 101

She was having a really hard time handling the vulnerabilities of all the creatures she loved.

It seemed there were often crises and physical challenges - a sickness here, an accident there…

Really difficult to deal with and super stressful.

"But," I reminded her, "this is the nature of loving living beings… We have to face and cope with these situations…"

"Yeah, I know," she said.

"When I was a little kid my dog died and I decided never to have a live animal again.  I switched to stuffed toys…"

"I really took good care of them and they were in perfect condition!"

Pretty good strategy, right?

Risk free…

Turned out her family moved and all her wonderfully cared for toys were in the one suitcase that never showed up at the new house…

What do ya say?

Is there a lesson in this one, or what?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - SUFFERING FOR OTHERS

The concept of taking on other's suffering in order to prove our caring is a learned behavior that usually only creates resentment in the intended recipient.

This magical concept of alleviating someone else's pain by suffering ourselves might work in stories of powerful healers, but when practiced by us ordinary mortals it usually only gets in the way.

No one who's suffering wants to feel responsible for causing others grief.

Think about how many times you've heard 'this is hurting me more than it hurts you'…  Did it do anything to make you feel better?

PAIN ALLEVIATION BY OSMOSIS

Let's check this one out ~

1)  Ask yourself if your suffering really helps anyone else.

2)  Ask yourself how and where you learned this was a good idea.

3)  Try this experiment:
Sit next to someone who is going through a hard time.
Pinch yourself - HARD!
Watch the other persons face.
Did it work?
Did your pain alleviate their suffering?

PAIN AND SUFFERING…

"I seem to equate feeling bad with helping," he told me with tears in his eyes.

Not the first time I've heard this one...

You know, that old 'suffering = empathy and being a kind and loving human being'…

HMMM…

Wonder where we learned this one?

What do ya say?

DO YOU THINK THIS IS AN EFFECTIVE LIFE STRATEGY?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - THE FLAWS OF ORDINARY HUMANS

In the play, My Fair Lady,Professor Henry Higgins decides he can transform the speech of Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into that of a woman who will be taken as a member of high society.

Is he successful?  Yes and no.

He manages to change her speech patterns, but is confronted by a righteously angry woman - resentful at being used for his dreams.

When we make people into things they are not - not only do we end up disappointed as our created 'structures' fall apart over time - but the recipients of our meddling turn on us in rage.

Why?

We haven't seen them for who they really are - and certainly haven't accepted that reality!

DEALING WITH REALITY

Have you ever done a 'Henry Higgins'?  If you are like most of us the answer is a resounding 'yes'.

Now ask yourself what you get from fantasizing your ideal - friend, partner, lover - and then shrouding a real person in this altered reality?

Think back to a situation when you did this.
What was the outcome?

Were you happy with the results?  Did you end up with what you really wanted?

Did you feel like you were in control?

MYTHICAL FRIENDS AND LOVERS

Remember this one?  This guy creates a statue - imbuing it with all the attributes he's ever wanted in a lover - and magically the statue comes to life…

Many of us would shake our heads and scoff at this tale of magic…

BUT

How many times in your life have you met someone and instilled them with your own values and desires - seeing them as an ideal partner, friend, lover…

Only to be seriously disappointed when they don't turn out to be your imagined creation…

What do ya say?

Is this magical thinking, or what?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - MOVEMENT AND THE BRAIN

Artists step back and look at their creations from many angles and perspectives to get it right.  They recognize that standing in one place creates distortion and brain freeze…

When you allow yourself to move - even from one side of the room to another - you can unlock a stuck perspective and see the world from a different angle!

6 EASY STEPS TO UNLOCKING 'STUCK'

The next time you feel stuck, try these easy steps:

1)  Actually get up and move - change position in the room.

2)  Ask yourself how things look different from this new angle.

3)  Can you allow yourself to see how everything changes?

4)  Train your eye to look for differences.

5)  How do things sound different from a different position in space?

6)  If you are in a group of people move around the group and see if you can feel the dynamics of the group shift as you do.

WHAT IS ...STUCK?

"I was in this awful meeting," he groaned, "and I was really stuck!"

"I just couldn't respond to what was going on and I didn't know what to do next!"

This was really getting to him...

"I felt like I was disappearing from the room," he continued,"and I'm sure they all thought I was a total loser!  I mean, I was so out of it!  I just sat there like a lump..."

"And that's not the first time this has happened to me… the last time was at a family dinner!  Ugh!"

"Next time," I suggested, "change seats!"

What do ya say?

Could changing your physical position change your mind?
