Hiding the details of abusive
relationships…
Smiling through pain…
Pretending awful parents are
loving and kind…
Why do we do this?
Anyone who has ever been
through it and survived can tell you the answer:
We try to make intolerable
situations, where we feel no power, tolerable, by making up excuses for those
who have harmed us or by taking the blame ourselves…
How did we learn to 'cover up'
for others in this way?
Usually by being told that
whatever went wrong was our fault, by understanding that no one would believe
us, and that we would be punished for
speaking up!
