SERIOUSLY SPEAKING

…The scent of Old Spice aftershave
…The sounds of a Bach sonata
…The taste of the first berries of summer
…The feel of hot sand between your toes
…The photo in an old family album

What we experience with our 5 senses – taste, smell, touch, sight, sound – is often stored along with the actual memory of an event.  Even years later, any of these sensory cues can trigger powerful memories and feelings.  read more

DANCE WITH IT!   EXPERIENTIAL APPS
An opportunity to experiment with some fun ideas...

Do you love to have milky, buttery oatmeal for breakfast?

How about chocolate chip cookies in the afternoon?  How do these things makes you feel?

There’s a reason that we call them ‘comfort foods’!  Ever stop and ask yourself if it’s really the taste and mouth feel that you are enjoying or if perhaps each of these foods is invoking a moment in your past – a sensory memory – that recreates a feeling of happiness…

Take a moment to make a list of the foods that you associate with happy memories from your past.
 Pizza?

Birthday cake?

Potato chips?

Soft bread?

Chocolate?

Grilled cheese sandwiches?

Coca Cola?

What else is on your list?

Now connect each of these foods to events and people.  What can you remember?

Imagine for a moment that you are an alien being just arrived from that famous spaceship… As someone with absolutely NO associations to any of these foods, what would you, this adult alien, experience tasting them for the first time?

Go through each of your foods on the list really allowing yourself this first time taste… What happens?

Please share some of this experiment with us!  It’s fun to hear your stories!

  1. When I was little, I wouldn't eat any kind of cheese except for Swiss, as it was so mild. So, whenever my parents made grilled cheese, I would only eat grilled Swiss sandwiches. They would make them on a grill press, so the sandwich would come out in two perfectly sealed triangles. The cheese inside would pull into long strings after the first few bites.

It's funny that I used to eat those sandwiches all the time; they were like one of my main food groups. But I haven't had one in probably 15 years... and since then I've learned the wonders of the standard American cheese sandwich.
