EMOTIONAL MODIFICATION

I mean moderation, right?
Well, sort of…

I'm talking about moderating and modifying what you do as you - and your life - evolves.  Check out these two stories, both true…

An older woman, let's call her Granny, wasn't happy where she was living.  At her 89th birthday she announced that it was time for her to move.  She had heard of a place and wanted to go check it out… she did, she moved and she's been smiling ever since - a lot!

The second story is about a younger man who is suffering from some debilitating physical problems…
"I'll never be able to run again," this ex-jock laments…

The moral of these stories?

You have to keep changing up your game... THINKING CHANGE - NOT LOSS!

Maybe you can't run like you used to - so walk!
Walking still not an option?

No problem.  Practice deep breathing!

You get the idea, right?
This is the most potent anti-depressant going:

EVOLVE WITH WHATEVER COMES YOUR WAY!

GIVING CREDIT - WHERE IT'S DUE…

What makes it difficult for us to acknowledge other people's contributions to our lives?

Sometimes it seems we feel that saying - 'thank you' - 'I appreciate you' - 'what a great idea you had' - weakens our position and lessens our power.

Perhaps some of this gets started at a young age, both at home and in the school room, where comparisons and competition tend to be the norm.  This can lead us to believe that there is only room for one 'winner', rather than teaching us to take joy in working collectively and collaboratively.

In reality, our generosity of spirit, our ability to recognize the importance of others in our lives, makes us stronger!

HERE'S A FUN EXPERIMENT TO TRY:

Imagine your parents telling you how much you have contributed to their lives…

Imagine they say:
"You know, I love it when you tell me about your life, I learn so much from you!"

How does this feel?

Now imagine your siblings telling you how smart they think you are and how much they have learned from you…

How does this feel?

Let each of these people tell you how much you have contributed to their lives and how much of who they are they've learned from you.

What happens as you do this?

How do you feel?
How do you feel about them?
Could you reverse it and say those same things back to them?

HEY! THAT'S MINE!

"I just hate it," she scowled, "when someone hijacks MY idea and tells it - to me! - as if I never said it in the first place!"

"What is the matter with these people?  Do they honestly forget where they got the idea?"

"Or are they just too miserly to give credit where it's due?"

"I really don't mind If someone uses my ideas - best form of flattery and all that - but jeez acknowledge that you got it from me!"

What do ya say?

Been down this road?

How did you handle it?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - THE ANXIETY OF CHOICES

If we had no choices we couldn't possibly make mistakes, right?

In today's world we have a multitude of choices.  We also have a really destructive tendency to 'Sunday morning quarterback' ourselves about the past.

"I shouldn't have…" is one of our most facile - and most destructive mantras!

Yes, today you might make a different decision - but that's partly because you actually learned from what ever happened yesterday!

CAN WE ACTUALLY APPRECIATE OUR MISTAKES?

Take a moment to think about how you learned to ride a bike …

Was it seamless?
How many times did the bike wobble?
Did you ever fall?

Now think about how you learned to swim…

Ever get a mouth full of water?
Ever do a belly flop into the pool?
Ever breathe in when you were supposed to breathe out?

Think about the results…
You probably learned to swim and ride a bike, right?

Remember, when you bully yourself about the past you create barriers to new learning!

THE CHALLENGE OF LETTING GO…

"But," he asked with a really worried look, "but really, what if I'm making a mistake?"

What was he talking about?

Well, in his case, that day, it was about breaking up with his girlfriend…

We've all heard this one hundreds of times over the years, right?

"But," we ask ourselves, "what if I'm making a mistake?"

About what?

Leaving the old job, taking a new one, moving, choosing a school, a career, a life partner…

What do ya say?

Ever ask yourself this one?
What did you answer?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - THE 'P-A' BURDEN

What's the lure of passive aggressive behavior?
Why would anyone be tempted to act out their anger in this distorted fashion?

And even more importantly, what's the cost to the actor?

We know how annoying it is to be on the receiving end of these sneaky anger attacks, but we usually don't stop to think about how doing this negatively impacts the passive aggressive person.

Two really self destructive consequences come with passive aggressive behavior:

First, by dealing with anger indirectly, the passive aggressive person never gets to check it out - to find out if their assumptions about their grievances are correct.

Secondly, and this one is really unfortunate, when anger is dealt with passive aggressively, it never really gets totally finished!

Q. AND A. ABOUT ANGER AND 'P-A' BEHAVIOR

What causes anger?
Obvious answer:  Something uninvited invades our personal space either physically or emotionally.

What is a healthy response to feeling angry?
'Check it out before you shout!'  Make sure that your perception of the situation fits the facts.  Something obviously didn't feel good, but sometimes we can be mistaken about the other person's intent - and of course, sometimes we are right on!

Once you are sure of the 'facts' anger needs to be released.  This does not mean dumping on another person!  Sometimes we can work it through without even talking to the person who made us angry.  We can talk to others about it, we can have imaginary conversations, we can release it creatively with physical activity.  And finally, of course, we can have a constructive conversation with the person we are angry with.

You know you are done with the angry feeling if you laugh or take a deep sigh or relief!

How does direct anger get distorted into passive aggressive behavior?
When we deal with anger passive aggressively, we make excuses to hurt the other by using our 'weaknesses' as the reason for letting them down.  We hide behind the shield of our own problems as a way to indirectly attack and hurt the other person.

Why should we work through our anger?
Working through anger means that it is no longer an active problem.  Holding onto anger increases our own suffering.  Old anger is a burden that smolders and adds weight to our lives!

OOPS! SORRY!!

"Sorry," he said, "it's taken me so long to return your call.  I've just been really busy…"

One month worth of really busy?  Uh huh…

"Sorry," she said, "I have to take a rain check.  I'm just really busy…"

The night before a long planned event really busy?  Uh huh…

"Sorry," he said, "I forget to bring any money.  I'll catch you next time…"

Third time in a row, forgot?  Uh huh…

What do you think these three people have in common?
If you guessed a full blown case of passive aggresivitus, you got it right!

"Who, me?" they say.  "Angry?  No way!"
Uh huh…

What do ya say?
Ever been on the receiving end of this one?
How about the doing end?
