YOU CAN'T GET WATER FROM…

How many times have you been hurt and disappointed because someone let you down?

Maybe they forgot your birthday?

Or chattered on about wonderful things in their lives at a time you were barely making it?

How about going into great detail about a minor ailment at a time you or a loved one were dealing with real suffering?

What do ya say?
How do you take care of yourself with this one?

Any ideas?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - THE 'SHOULD' CURSE

As soon as we start making rules we create resistance!
Think about it…

If you had a sibling and your parents said - 'Be nice to your brother' - do you remember what you felt?

Maybe you were one of the few angels visiting our planet, but for most of us the more likely internal responses were:  'Why?', 'Not my job!', 'Ick!'

When we remove those unrealistic imperatives of universal perfection and acknowledge that as humans we feel jealousy, resentment, anger, and competition, we remove the need to pretend.

Once we do this, we leave the door open to working through the 'negatives' and actually arriving at some of those warm fuzzy places!

DANCE WITH IT!   EXPERIENTIAL APPS
An opportunity to experiment with some fun ideas…

HOW MANY 'SHOULDS' DO YOU HAVE?

Make a list of your 'shoulds'.
Can you actually allow yourself to write these down?

How long is your list?
When did you adopt each of these rules?

As you look at your list imagine giving yourself permission to do the opposite of what you wrote.

What do you feel as you try this imaginary experiment?

EVERYBODY GET TOGETHER…

Remember that song?  The Youngbloods - 1967

Pretty sounds… Nice words…

Okay... 'try to'…
But reality?
Not!

What do ya say?

Can you see how buying this as a 'should' might actually be toxic?

SO, WHERE IS IT?

"So," he demanded, and yes, it was an emphatic demand.
"If I give up believing that if I follow all those rules I grew up with everything will come my way…"

"THEN WHAT!?"

It's a good question, right?

We grow up being told that if we're good, good things will inevitably happen to us…

If we follow all the rules, we will be rewarded…
THERE IS A POT OF GOLD AT THE END OF THAT RAINBOW…
Isn't there?

What do ya say?
Can you figure this one out?

REALITY CHECK

'You can't get blood from a stone!'

Do we really need to be told that this is an unrealistic expectation?

Yup!

Think about it…

How many times have you wanted something - and truly thought you could get it - from someone totally incapable of giving it to you?

What do ya say?
Are you hooked on this?

Not you, right?
