SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - SATISFACTION

When we start obsessing about what comes next before we get there, we lose the moment.

What does this really mean?

Our senses - taste, touch, sight, smell, hearing - get jammed.

Instead of feeling we are plotting future moves and our brains, while certainly very elastic and expansive, are pulled in two directions - present and future - and tend not to interpret either to its fullest.

SLOW IT DOWN!

Try making a pact with yourself about staying in the moment.
Stay focused on what you are doing NOW.
          When you are eating...
          When you are exercising...
When you are talking to someone...
When you are reading, doing chores…

Check it out.
How does this change things?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - WHAT'S MISSING?

The theory behind focusing on what's missing in our lives, instead of what we have might come from all the emphasis in our culture on pushing for more and better.

From an early age we are encouraged to never be satisfied with what is in front of us, but rather constantly told we have the potential to do and be more.  We are often punished when we don't embrace this belief.  We get bad grades and get called 'lazy'.

While in theory encouraging children to perform to their best potential might sound like a no brainer, the focus on not being good enough permeates our belief system, often creating a sense of deprivation and bitterness.

HOW MANY 'ROTTEN APPLES' ARE YOU CARRYING?

How many times this week did you focus on what was missing from your life?

How did doing this make you feel?

Here's an interesting experiment:

Every time you focus on the negative spaces in your life -
          - the invitation you didn't get…
          - the date who never called back…
          - the people you helped - or gave gifts to - who didn't thank you…
          - the friend who forgot your birthday…

You get the idea - all of us CAN add to this list and backpack these dissatisfactions…

OR…

Each time one of these things happen you could remind yourself that (you think I am going to tell you to count your blessings right?  Nope!)...

Instead remind yourself what idiots those people are - and how much they've missed out on!

The idea here is that when others do these things we tend to fault ourselves and feel diminished.

REALLY BAD THINKING!
'They' lost out - NOT YOU!

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - WANT TO KEEP HOLDING THAT GRUDGE?

Here are two interesting thoughts about holding grudges, two different sides of the story:

"Grudges must feel satisfying in some way; if they didn’t, we might not be as likely to hold on to them for so long …"  read more

“Not forgiving is like drinking rat poison and then waiting for the rat to die.”  Anne Lanott - Traveling Mercies:Some Thoughts on Faith

So what is the story on this one?
Who has the heaviest burden, the 'grudger' or the 'grudgee'?

And how often does the recipient of the grudge even know they are the target of this emotional vendetta?

HOLDING A GRUDGE?  CHECK IT OUT:

Let's have some fun with this one…

Who are you holding a grudge about?
More than one person?

Make a list.
Do you see any common threads in the content of your grudges?  The types of people you are holding grudges against?

Imagine, just for a minute, that you might actually be enjoying the process of holding on… How could that be?  Is it possible that you feel powerful in this position? (Just a thought…)

Now imagine that you could say anything you want to your 'grudgee' (fantasy, folks, you can really push it!)  Get into it and exaggerate - you'll know you have really stretched this one if you start laughing…

And finally decide - totally your choice - if you want to continue to carry this particular load or let it go?

Remember choice is the operative word on this one - Hey if you want to keep carrying the weight no one has the right to take it away from you, right?
