SPRING FORWARD!

Spring began a few days ago – and here on the East Coast we are still expecting snow…

But Spring is our season of hope – a release from the dark of winter into a time of renewal.

We await those first miraculous touches of green with a deep conviction that things can and do change.

Following the bleakness of winter when everything  is covered with the shrouds of snow, spring marks the rebirth of the earth with the bursting forth of green life.”  -Michael Strassfeld

Both the holidays of Passover (Pesah) and Easter, celebrated during this season, remind us that hope, our ability to overcome adversity, is always with us!

SAY… WHAT?

"You are so uncompromising!" he declared uncompromisingly.
"Every time I say how something should be, you disagree!"

Incredible…

"You are so stubborn!" he continued.
"Every time I tell you what to do, you say 'no'!  Really stubborn…"

Heh… heh… heh…

Ever try to get through to one of these people?

The dialog goes something like this:
"Excuse me!  How come I'm uncompromising just because I don't agree with you?"

"You see, "they respond," look how incredibly uncompromising and stubborn you are!"

Ever want to wring someone's neck?

Ever feel like you are travelling in a parallel universe?

The Jewish Holidays this time of year invite us to resolve our unfinished business and get good with ourselves, with others and with God…

One and three seem pretty do-able, but sometimes I wonder about #2…

What do ya say?
Do you think it's possible to get through to these people?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - TIME OUT?

So many of our human myths and fables are about hibernation during the winter months - really hiding out and going on a low setting -
Remember the Greek myths of Persephone and Demeter?

In the Navaho culture certain tales are only meant to be listened to in the winter.  check out Coyote and Lizard

And then there's our fascination with those hibernating bears…

In our modern societies we fight this natural inclination to shut down in the cold, dark time of year.

What do you imagine would happen if we embraced winter as a time of rest and renewal -  a time to slow down, breathe deeply and lay the ground work for our emotional Spring?

DANCE WITH IT!   EXPERIENTIAL APPS
An opportunity to experiment with some fun ideas...

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU IMAGINE ACCEPTING WINTER AS A TIME TO CREATE CALM…

Try this experiment:

Take a moment and go 'inside' with intention!

Breathe deeply, and as you do feel a sense of calm and peace circulating throughout you entire being…

This might be a time for 'awake dreaming' those floaty, magical moments when we move into a non- doing realm and just drift…

Winter is a wonderful time for story telling, for lighting candles, reading, meditation…

A time for slowing down, watching the snow fall, enjoying the earth's moment of rest and making it your own…

GONG XI FA CAI!

It’s the Lunar New Year and the Chinese Year of the Horse.

According to the Chinese calendar, last year was the year of the snake - a year that can potentially bring many challenges… Uh huh …

Well, hang in there.  This New Year promises to be better!

This year's horse - a Green Wooden Horse - is a symbol of spring and renewal.

Chinese New Year is also called Spring Festival and Lunar New Year.  Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year.

Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality.

The horse birth years are 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, and 2002.

Those born in a horse year are thought to be cheerful, skillful with money, perceptive, witty, talented and good with their hands.

What do ya say?
Are we fortunate to have so many different New Year's and so many opportunities for "do-overs" in our lives, or what?

A TIME OF RENEWAL

The world is new to us every morning – That is the Lord’s gift, and we should believe we are reborn each day.”   - Baal Shem Tov

Today is the first day of the Jewish New Year.  It is considered a time of renewal - a time to evaluate and rethink how we have lived in the past year.  A truly valuable process for all of us!

In our multi-cultural, multi-religious world we are blessed with the ability to take beauty and wisdom from many sources.

Our role is to open our eyes and receive and learn from this pool of knowledge that has come down to us through generations of ‘our people’ – the human race.

We are fortunate to have records and sources that allow us to learn and evolve from our ancestors.

May we all open our hearts and minds to the beauty that surrounds us and use this as a time of renewal!
