BE PREPARED - NOT!

Remember those kids in uniform with their fingers up in the air? No, not one finger!

I think it was 2 or 3.

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, our parents - they all chanted that ever present mantra:

BE PREPARED…

And remember that saying:  Cut once, measure twice - or was it measure three or four times?

It was all over the place!
Teachers, religious leaders - BE PREPARED!

But wait, did you ever stop to think that maybe all that prep work actually got in the way?

What ever happened to "Just do it!"?

What do ya think?
Ever wonder about this one?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING – ARE YOU GETTING THINGS DONE?

One of the most memorable – and romantic – quotes about putting things off comes from the movie Gone with the Wind.

Remember Scarlett’s famous response after Rhett Butler blows her off with his famous, “Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn” line?

With determination in her eyes she states:  “I’ll think of some way to get him back… after all tomorrow is another day…”    (check it out)

DANCE WITH IT!   EXPERIENTIAL APPS
An opportunity to experiment with some fun ideas...

There seem to be 4 basic human responses when it comes to getting things done:

1)      The Maintenance ‘ I need to keep everything up to date’ type.
2)     The last minute ‘I hate myself for doing it this way’ type.
3)     The last minute ‘I love the adrenaline rush’ type.
4)     The ‘If I keep my eyes closed tight enough and long enough it might totally disappear’ type.

To be mentally healthy we need to include a focused awareness of the choices we make – and that they are choices.

Try this experiment to increase this focused awareness:

Use the list above as a template to evaluate your responses to the things in your ‘To Do’ list.

For example, with housekeeping:

Type 1)   I keep everything shiny and up to date.

Type 2)  Yikes!  I can’t believe I waited until an hour  before my guests are       coming!  Won’t I ever learn?

Type 3)  Same scenario – different response:  Yahoo!  Ride ‘em cowboy!  Lasso those dust bunnies!

Type 4)  Maybe if I serve enough wine they won’t notice…

Where do you fit in?  Can you accept your way as being a choice?

ARE YOU WAITING FOR MANANA?

Why do we stall?  Do you think it might be part of the magical thinking we picked up as kids?  You know, if I close my eyes and hold my breath the monster will go away?

Has it ever worked?   Here are a few categories:

Taxes – Yikes!  All those tiny slips of paper that you promised you’d organize all year…

Those awful phone calls – Ugh!  Just don’t quite have the strategy together yet, right?

Paperwork – No matter how much you do…

House cleaning – Talk about repeat performances…

Laundry – Disposable paper clothes, anyone?

What about it?  Do you put off for tomorrow what you don’t want to do today?

PROCRASTINATION…

I mean seriously – there should be a song – Oh wait – there is!  Lots of them.  Really!  Check out YouTube!  There’s even a Procrastinators Anonymous!

What does that tell you?

Maybe, just maybe, this is normal human behavior?  Maybe if we hadn’t spent our lives being scolded for putting things off - we’d have been able to realize that we just plain old weren’t ready!  What do ya think?

Have any good ‘wait until the last minute’ stories to share?
