SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - STRATEGIC TIME OUTS

When we are young our parents give us time outs - and they know just when we need them - hitting, biting, yelling, whining - Opps!  Time out!

When we are older, we also get time outs - colds, sprains, hospital stays, burn out - all clearly indicate the need for down time.

Isn't it interesting that, other than that two week vacation, most of our time outs are dependent on negatives?

Let's see, sickness and 14 allowed days out of 365…
Does this make sense?

THE MAGIC OF TIME OUTS.
There is a story about Albert Einstein.  When asked how he came up with his theory of relativity he replied that he was staring out the window, daydreaming…     Albert Einstein and Creativity

TIME OUT QUICKIES:

*  Laugh out loud.
Sit on a terrace and watch the sun rise or set…or both.
*  Write a story to a child.
Read a silly book.
*  Doodle.
Do something totally different than what you are supposed to do.
*  Talk to a plant.
Hug a fluffy dog.

Mostly be aware that you are giving yourself time out - and that it's more than okay - it's crucial!

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - TIME OUT…

What actually is time, and more importantly how did it become our enemy?

A second, a minute, an hour, a year - what do these really mean and how did they become negative measurements.

Think about it.

We start this oh, so early… First it's, "Look at him!  Only 8 months old and already talking… Oh, your baby doesn't talk yet?  Oh dear…"      (and then there was Albert Einstein...)

And of course we have school and all those report cards, measuring how we do - one grading period at a time.

And later:  "What s/hes 21 and still no real career?"  And on and on…

Is it any wonder that we have learned to cringe?

TRANSFORMING AND EXPANDING TIME

Ever have that feeling of it all going by in a flash and at the same time seeming like forever?

Time is fungible - a gift that belongs to us.  We decide what it means.  Of course it's okay to plan for the future as long as that plan is the type of road map that allows for lots of detours…

HERE'S A FUN EXPERIMENT:

Breathe deeply - feel the air moving in and out of your body, your rib cage expanding, your entire torso moving with the rhythm of your breath... allow your eyes to relax... maybe even closing... experiencing how everything slows down, becomes quiet and peaceful…

What happened to 'real' time as you did this?
If you look at your watch how many minutes actually went by?
How long did it feel?
