SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - GO ASK ALICE

We expect stability.

Oh, we know babies change.
And toddlers.
And teenagers.
And old people…

But that big gap between age 21 and whatever we see as old?
Okay, minor changes…

HAH!

Life is change.
And flux.
And we really don't have any say in the matter, unless…

Well how long can you hold your breath?

WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?

Make a list of what you expected your life to be.
What were these beliefs based on?

Bedtime stories?
Movies?
Parental beliefs?
Observation?

How 'locked down' were these expectations of yours?
What did you feel the first time life proved you wrong?

Now imagine you can slide back in time and hit some of the high and low points without those pre-set expectations.

How might the experience have felt different?

WHO ARE YOU?

Remember 'Alice in Wonderland'?

If you read it as a child it was probably kind of confusing, right?

As grown ups we hear bits of it quoted all the time…

And if we can let some of the underground meanings permeate, it's a wonderful story.

Alice questions her identity as she wanders through this strange and magical world she falls into…

Hmmm…
Resonate a little?

Check it out:

"I've changed so many times since this morning…"

"I wonder if I've been changed in the night?"

And remember who all the others she meets think she is?

Hmmm, again.

What do ya say?

Does any of this sound familiar?

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - SHIFTING

Once we accept the inevitability of change, we are more able to see it coming and prepare ourselves to handle whatever happens…

Since change is inevitable it helps to look for the 'take away' rather than label things as good or bad.

We can see these shifts as opportunities for next steps in our lives.

THE ART OF ACCEPTANCE

1)  Drop the value judgment - good or bad are synthetic states!

2)  Expectations of where you should be or how your life should be have a tendency to create toxic life syndrome.

3)  Learn to speak 'NOW'.

4)  Look for the 'takeaway'.  What can you learn from your new circumstances?

5)  Always give yourself credit for dancing with what comes your way!

SERIOUSLY SPEAKING - WHAT'S YOUR CHANGE-ABILITY?

Whether we want to accept the assignment or not, life is a series of changes.

Remember changing from Elementary School to Middle School (Junior High to some of us)?

How about the transition to High School?

College?

For some there's the excitement of the new start but others fear the unknown and what they may perceive as 'starting over'.

In reality each step in our lives, each change can be seen as a progression.

You can bring anything you've learned with you on the journey and leave behind some of the 'played out' junk that you no longer need!

PRACTICE LETTING GO…

A nice mantra is "Allow!  Allow…"

Here's a fantasy to try:
Imagine some upcoming situations that you know require change:
          A new job
          A move
          A new relationship
Letting go of an old relationship
Even things like changing your eating or exercise patterns…

Now imagine that you are in a room with a beautiful door at the end of a hallway.
Breathe deeply as you look at the door.
Now imagine walking towards the door…
Continue breathing deeply…

Now catalog what you are feeling:
          Excitement?
          Fear?
      Dread?
      Anticipation?

Say to yourself:
"Allow… allow…"

Continue breathing deeply and notice what happens…
